How To Incorporate Masks Into Your Skincare Routine

Mar 22, 2023

From sheet masks to clay masks and everything in between, there has been a huge increase in interest in this particular step of the beauty routine. But, when there are so many options and so many steps of your routine to consider, how can you be sure you’re using your chosen face masks in the right way for the best possible results? We’re here to help shed some light on the subject to help you glow.

Selecting a mask

Because of the heavy duty nature of a face mask, you may find that you don’t necessarily need to incorporate one into your routine regularly if you have generally healthy skin. That being said, sometimes it’s nice to have a boost alongside your usual skincare, especially when your skin has been feeling lackluster, or just as an occasional pampering session when you’ve had a long week, and a Talika face mask is the perfect treat. Whatever your skin concerns may be, it’s always best to opt for masks with beneficial ingredients that are free of alcohol, excessive fragrance, and essential oils.

Some of our suggestions for common skin issues are as follows:

  • Dry, tired skin - Hydrating masks
Perfect for giving your face an instant refresh and keeping skin soft and healthy, hydrating masks can be a great booster for your usual moisturizer.
Our Bio Enzymes Mask Hydrating is jam packed full of hydrating ceramides to bring your skin back to life.

  • Uneven, dull skin - Brightening masks
Specially formulated to brighten and nourish skin, brightening masks can be the boost your skin needs for improved complexion.
Vitamin B3 is just one of the natural active ingredients in our Bio Enzymes Brightening Mask that works to illuminate and soothe your skin instantly.

  • Areas of interest - Focused “mini” masks
If you want to treat one particular area of skin, a focused mask or treatment could be a great way to give your chosen feature a pamper.
Incredibly effective for refreshing the eye area in just 15 minutes, our Eye Therapy Patches are enriched with ceramides and vegetable oils of musk rose, wheat germ, avocado, and shea butter that smooth, moisturize and correct the complexion.

  • Environmental damage/irritation - Tailored masks
If you have experienced stress to your skin from the environment around you, whether it’s sun exposure or the pollution of a city break, there are plenty of masks on the market made for purpose which you can try.
Too much fun in the sun? Our Bio Enzymes After Sun Mask uses biocellulose to deliver the perfect cocktail of natural ingredients to revive your skin in just 15 minutes.
  • Clogged pores - Clay masks
Clay is naturally absorbent and so is perfect for drawing impurities out of the skin without drying out your face.
Want to refresh and rejuvenate your skin? Our Pink Clay Mask combines red and white clays to effectively draw out impurities.

Where does it fit into a skincare routine?

Depending on the mask you have chosen, it will fit into your skincare routine slightly differently and making sure you use a mask at the right time can drastically improve the benefits you see. Here are our tips for when a mask should be used:

  • Regardless of the type of mask, the golden rule is to always make sure you remove your makeup and cleanse before you apply it to your face

  • If the mask needs to be washed off of skin, apply it after cleansing but before the rest of your skincare routine.

  • If it is a hydrating mask that doesn’t need to be washed off, apply it after cleansing and before moisturizing.

  • If the mask needs to be left on overnight, apply it as the last step of your nighttime skincare routine. If it is a hydrating mask and you don’t have extremely dry skin, you will not need to use a nighttime moisturizer.

What mistakes should I avoid?

Some common mistakes when adding face masks to your routine that you should try to avoid are as follows:

  • You don’t wash your hands and face before applying
To ensure that you’re not layering a mask on top of dirt and bacteria, make sure you cleanse your skin and pat dry before applying and always make sure you have clean hands.

  • You overuse
Whether it’s applying heavy duty masks every day or using far too much of a mask on your face, it’s easy to overwhelm your skin. Make sure you always note the guidance on the packaging regarding how often to use the products and how thin the layer of a product on your skin should be.

  • You leave it on for too long
Much like the point above, when using a face mask make sure you follow guidance on how long the mask should remain on your skin- any longer won’t have any additional benefits and, depending on the mask, could irritate your skin.

  • You forget to moisturize after
Unless it is an overnight mask or the product specifies otherwise, it’s always best to moisturize after a face mask to lock in moisture and avoid skin drying out.

  • You don’t use them consistently
Most face masks will continue to give you amazing skin if you use them regularly as part of your skincare routine. While we don’t recommend daily use, once or twice per week depending on your skin is a great routine to get into.

Face masks can be a lot of fun and are a great way to give your skin a boost that sometimes your regular skincare can’t achieve. Not only do they benefit your skin, but taking time out to pamper yourself is great for your mental wellbeing and is an activity that you can easily share with those around you or indulge in while relaxing.
